That title! So spot on it hurts
Boy, oh boy, was the title spot on.
This book renders my ability to write things that somewhat resemble reviews obsolete. Fear not! I will try none the less *snicker*
It portrays so many issues really well, as well as you can through the perspective of one character that is: broken families, emotional abuse, abandonment, death & grief, suicide, dealing - or not dealing - with intense emotions, addiction, sex as a way of escaping ones problems and also as a way of humiliating oneself and others, friendships and how they fare in the face of serious problems like the above, self destruction.
I have to say that it hits home for me, in a sense. I’m not going to elaborate on the how, just that it does.
This is the third book I read from this author, the other two being Sustain and Fighter and I have to say I really, really like & enjoy her style, themes, characters and writing exceedingly. The characters and situations are extremely real, and the issues and/or behaviours portrayed are done very well so. And such is the case with the previously mentioned books along with this one.
However I would like to note that this book was immensely heavier in its theme/characters etc compared to the two works I’ve read and listed above.
There are some book types that are either difficult or nearly impossible to state likes and dislikes and this belongs to that category. It has left me with a difficult to describe feeling or maybe a bit more accurate, mix of feelings. I did enjoy it and thought of it as a pleasant read, well, as much as someone can enjoy and/or characterise a themed book like this a pleasant read.
It is not that heavy, i know there are heavier reads out there, but still this is not for everyone. As it stands i would recommend it to anyone that is half sure they can stomach and get through it.
